WHAT:
PortalSoft’s first product, Portal4Law™, is an all-in-one SaaS practice management solution for the legal industry, with broad capabilities in client, matter, and digital document management, as well as invoicing.
HOW:
Portal4Law™ was born out of a collaboration between legal and computer professionals. Their goal was to overcome the complexity and cost of legacy systems while bringing high function to larger numbers of users at an affordable price. Their methodology:
- Apply years of experience delivering advanced document management client-server software to the forensic legal expert community.
- Leverage an extensible, object-oriented database design to incorporate additional much-demanded features such as multiple-fee-arrangement invoicing.
- Apply the economies of scale and advanced browser-based technologies of cloud computing.
WHY:
Portal4Law™ was first created to address the now urgent need for legal professionals to prepare for the federal mandate requiring the accurate transfer of all requested electronic documents in the form they were obtained. Federal Rules of Civil Procedure, Rule 34(b) requires organizations to “produce electronically stored information (ESI) in its native format, with its metadata intact and to prove chain of custody.” The California Judicial Council has enacted similar rules to take effect in 2009. Many other states have already enacted similar rules and amendments pertaining to ESI.
To add to that, today's challenging economy demands that firms handle more clients with less resources. Consider this: Larger law firms have historically been able to justify the cost of an IT staff. IT would cobble together and maintain digital storage and retrieval, client management, and invoicing tools, with the collective goal of automating the practice.
